Bryna ducked her head into his collarbone as Daniel started out of the barn with her. She was clearly exhausted and clearly in need of supper and a bed. He just wondered if they could manage that without everyone else getting in the way. However, as he picked his way carefully through the mud and back to the house, his determination to take care of her no matter what anyone said took hold in his heart.

She was young. She was scared. And now, save for him, she was all alone in the world. He knew to a great extent how that felt, and he wasn’t about to let her down. At the back door he managed to get it open. She was still clinging to his neck and still breathing like she was crying. Not that he blamed her. This day had hardly been easy.

“Miss Bryna!” Sissy said, coming to them from the fire.

“Shh.” Daniel shook his head, not wanting to alert the whole house to their arrival.

“Is she all right?” Sissy laid a hand on her friend.

“She needs to lie down upstairs. Can we get there with no one seeing?”

Sissy thought that through and then nodded. “Here.” She led him over to the servants’ quarters and opened the door. “Stay here, and I will make sure of it.” Pushing them inside gently, she pulled the door closed on her exit.

“Daniel.” Bryna pulled her head up from his shoulder.

“Shh.”

“I should go…”

“Just rest.” He slowed his own breathing to calm her. “Just rest.”

In his arms, he felt her relax then, and he was glad of it. Now if Sissy would just hurry. He bent his head so that he could breathe in her scent and feel her warmth. It wasn’t that he was cold from the outside. He was deathly cold from the inside—worry for her and for what came next coiled over his heart. Closing his eyes, he asked the Lord to keep her safe and then berated himself for doing so. He had prayed. How many nights had he prayed by his mother’s bedside that the Lord would spare her, and what had it gotten him? Another trip to the cemetery. His heart hurt at the memory.

“Mr. Brody.” Sissy was back.

He jerked his head up and then wished he hadn’t. However, she never moved.

“No one is upstairs. John is watching the parlor and the entry.”

“Okay.” He wasn’t sure why that was important, but he followed her out just the same. In the kitchen, he paused. “Can you make something for her to eat?”

“First, I will help you get her upstairs.”

He nodded and followed her as she took point lookout for each new piece of ground they covered. In no time he was quietly ascending the stairs, being careful to make as little sound as possible. He could hear the others in the parlor. It sounded like half the town was here even though they were trying to be quiet.

When he got to Bryna’s room, which he’d never seen other than one small glance in the deep of night, Sissy opened the door and led him inside.
